It's fitting that during ESPN's highly touted "rivalry week" of college basketball, which included an awesome, gutty win by North Carolina last night over the Dookingtons, the U.S. soccer team had its big rivalry game, too. And it was good to see that the Yanks came out on top, 2-0.
This one always gets a little chippy.
And of course, general wuss and new David Beckham teammate, Landon Donovan, came up big, providing an assist on the first score and getting the second goal on his own. Nevermind that this was a freaking exhibition match, or that Landon's goal came during stoppage time at the end of the game. These are the ones that matter. According to Landon supporters. All that World Cup chokery? Ah, no big deal. So let's give it up for Landon Donovan, the A-Rod/Bode Miller/Karl Malone of American soccer. Big ups, Landon. When the stakes are low, you really deliver. Keep picking those cherries, buddy. And Godspeed.
